VICTOR XIE is a composer-pianist who interlaces his compositions and recorded improvisations in an ongoing project titled The Phoenix, which explores his fascination with birdsong, the concept of rebirth, and ancient art and philosophy from Greece and China.
Victor’s musical performances range from Baroque to Contemporary Classical programs to Jazz and improvisation shows. In the Spring of 2023, at the Dimenna Center, NYC, Triptych premiered his compositions alongside other emerging composers. Victor has performed contemporary jazz alongside the Sylvie Courvoisier ensemble and the Black Artists Unified Band at the New School. He’s also brought contemporary performance to artistic spaces like the Mason Civic League Center in Hoboken, NJ, and Qualia Contemporary Art in Palo Alto, CA. In the Spring of 2021, Victor won Piano Honors at New England Conservatory, performing his compositions. In the Spring of 2020, he was a laureate in the National Chopin Competition of the United States. Before attending the conservatory, he was a winner of the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts Concerto Competition. He performed Saint-Saëns Concerto no.2 with the Mercury Orchestra at Sanders Theatre, Harvard. Victor is strongly interested in 古琴（Guqin) and Chinese calligraphy and has studied these ancient disciplines since the Covid lockdown in 2020. He recently wired up an old organ pedalboard to practice on a digital organ instrument and built an ergonomic box controller from scratch that plays in the octatonic mode. During his free time, he enjoys playing Zelda and befriending stray cats.
Victor Xie completed his BM in piano performance with Professor Alexander Korsantia and Victor Rosenbaum at the New England Conservatory of Music. He studied Composition briefly with Prof. Alla Cohen and John Heiss in 2020. He recently graduated in 2023 with an MM in Composition under the instruction of Prof. Huang Ruo and Prof. Lowell Liebermann at Mannes School of Music.
