The New York Composers Circle's competition committee met Saturday and selected Eric Segerstrom's "Two Poems," for violin, cello, and piano, as the winner of the NYCC's seventh annual composers' competition.

Segerstrom is a second-year undergraduate at the Juilliard School who has already won several prestigous prizes and whose music has been performed by such organizations as the New York Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The winning work, which is based on two poetic forms -- the pantoum and the villanelle, and which the committee felt was outstandingly original, will be premiered at the New York Composers Circle's final concert of the 2013-14 season, at the Symphony Space Thalia on June 7, 2014.

There was an Honorable Mention as well: David Brooks' "'Metamorphosis' Variations," for prepared piano.  Brooks is a prize-winning pianist, and regularly performs as well as a violinist and violist.  In his piece, each variation is a variation on the preceding one.

The NYCC's annual composers' competition is open only to nonmembers of the organization who live in the New York metropolitan area. The winning work is performed in one of the organization's concerts during the following season, and in addition the winner receives a year's free membership in the NYCC.
